Surviving High School (:

To all the year 8's that are going to high school next year. DONT freak out about it (like I did), its not as scary as it looks, and to be honest its not that different from intermediate or primary school, just bigger and there are a few more people.

On your first day of high school don't make the mistake most other year 9's will and take all your books to school, because the odds are that you wont have any classes for the first couple of days. All you need to take is a refill pad of a A4 notebook, pencil, pens, rubbers and pencil sharpeners.

When you start high school don't be scared to join sports teams or clubs that interest you, as its one of the fastest way to meet new people. In the first few months try not to do negative things that would draw attention to you because people will get to know you by the mistake you made without even knowing you. High school is not like the programs on TV, everyone is pretty friendly and they are all trying to do the same thing as you.. FIT IN! even if it doesn't seem like it.

Once you start classes, make sure you keep track of all the homework you need to complete and when it is due. The easy way to do this is to record it in you Whanau coloured diary. These diaries are really helpful and are your ticket to get out of class. So DONT lose it. Also make sure you find out from your teachers when your monthly assesments will be so you can be organized and study for them (: AND don't be afraid to ask for help from your teachers.

Letter Homework (:

Dear Ms Gutschlag,

For our english homework this week, we were asked by our english teacher Miss Kelly to write a thank you letter to a teacher of our choice. I chose you because I really enjoy your class as you make it fun for me to learn and it is something I look forward to every Tuesday and Thursday of every week.

I have really learnt alot from you this year, and I like how each term we learn about a different topic. I really enjoyed learning about Human Rights Heros, Human rights, Hitler and WW2 because they were all so different but still related in a way and very interesting. I also like the way how we usually watch a movie relating to each of the topics we learn about, as this really helps me understand the topic further.

I would really like to thank you for making social studies fun and interesting for my classmates and I this year, I absolutely loved having you as my social studies teacher in my first year of high school as I feel you have taught me as much as I need to know to start the begining of year 10 off well. Once again thank you.

From Breanna.

Christmas (:

The History of Christmas:

Christmas Day is a holiday which is celebrated all around the world on December the 25th to remember the birth of Jesus. Christmas was originally a Christian holiday, but nowadays it is celebrated by a huge amount of non-christians worldwide.

How is Christmas celebrated around the world?

On Christmas Eve churches have special services to recognise the birth of Jesus, with sermons and carol singing (christmas songs). The most popular tradition world wide is the belief in Santa Claus  by children all around the world. Santa Claus is a jolly, white-bearded man, who wears a red coat with white collar and cuffs, white-cuffed trousers and black leather boots, he supposedly travels around the world in one night in his sleigh which is pulled by nine reinder, delivering presents to good little boys and girls, to be opened on Christmas Day.
Christmas Trees are also another big tradition, most households put up a christmas tree and decorate it will lights, ornements, tinsel and candy canes an angel or star is usually placed at the top of the tree.

How do my family celebrate Christmas?

On the 1st of December my family and I put up the Christmas tree and start our homemade Advent calander, which counts down the days till Christmas. On Christmas Eve my little sister and I set out our Santa stockings underneath the Christmas Tree because we don't have a fireplace, which traditionally is where the stockings would be hung. On Christmas Day we open up our presents, and then get ready for our Christmas dinner, which is usually at our house, with our extended family which sometimes gets up to 23 people for dinner. We usually eat roast turkey, ham, vegetables and salad, Christmas pudding, strawberries and ice cream for dessert. We also exchange gifts, the children get presents from everyone and the adults buy one gift for another adult so that everyone gets a gift.

If I was in charge of school (:

If I was in charge of school I would change the timetable to make it that on a Wednesday students start school 50 mins later than usual, so there is no more 50 min tutor, or students could use the time to do independent study. I would also make the year 9 option classes longer so students get more time to learn about what they are interested in. I think that this change would also make students happier to come to school and learn on that certain day.

P.E is probably one of the most loved subjects, so at the end of each year I would let each student put down a sport they like and that would go into consideration for what sports they would be doing in P.E the year after. This would show people that not only the teachers input goes into the yearly plans but the students does aswell.

If students aren't in a year level dance class they would still be considered to be a part of Stage Challenge or Bring It On, if they have dance ability or do dance classes outside of school. There are students with dancing talent that isn't being used.

My Holiday (:

In the first week of the holidays I went to cooks beach with my friend Maria and my family. It rained most of the time so we didnt really get to do much outside so when we did have the chance to go outside I had lots of fun going kyaking, swinging off rope swings into the freezing cold water, tipping Maria out of her kayak and using a one person kayak for two people. We also went sight seeing and completed three 1000 piece puzzles while it rained for 3 days straight.

The internet it a dangerous place .

I disagree that the internet is a dangerous place. It is a never ending source of information and can be used for research, social networking, entertainment, communication, in the work place and even school work.

I have recently noticed that in the media lately there has been alot of stories about the negative side of the internet, such as: cyber bullying, invasion of privacy, identity stealing, impersonating and even hacking. But I believe that if people use the internet correctly the positives outweigh the dangers.
By following a few simple rules such as: changing your privacy settings to private, putting limited amounts of information up about yourself, not accepting any friend requests from people you dont know, never responding to emails from people you dont know and never telling anyone your password you will make using the internet alot safer for yourself.

Cyber bulling is the most common type of bullying there is and when surveyed one in five young people said they have been a victim. Statistics show that girls are twice as likely to be affected by threatening texts. If students are being cyber bullied they should be encouraged to report this to their parents or teachers, they could block people that they dont want contact with or blacklist them to prevent the bullying.

In conclusion, if the internet is used with caution it is a world wide source of information and communication that is here to stay, therefore in my eyes it is not a dangerous place.

2nd Review (: !!

The Help

The Help is a Comedy-Drama movie directed by Tate Taylor. It is about a young lady named Skeeter and her relationship with two black maids during the Civil Rights period in the early 1960's. Skeeter is a journalist who wants to write a book from the point of veiw of the maids, exposing the racism they are faced with as they work for the white families.
At first it is hard for Skeeter to convince the maids to tell her their stories as if they are caught they would be punished or maybe even killed. After being mistreated by the families they work for they decide that their storys need to be heard and talk to Skeeter. Skeeter writes a draft of the stories and sends it to the editor who informs Skeeter that she will need more than two maids stories to get the book published. After a black man is shot in their community the black maids decide that their voice needs to be heard and they are all prepared to tell their stories to Skeeter. Skeeter completes the book and it is published and is a great success. Skeeter then shares the profits of the books equally and some of the maids never have to work again.
This movie is heartrenching at times exposing the truth of racial separation and also funny in parts, exposing what it was really like to be either black or white and how different their lives were from each other.

First Review !! :DD

The Vampire Diaries:

The Vampire Diaries is an American teen supernatural drama television series developed by Kevin Wiliamson and Julie Plec and based on the book series 'The Vampire Diaries' written by L.J. Smith. The Vampire Diaries is set in the small town of Mystic Falls which has a supernatural history. It is about a 17 year old girl called Elena Gilbert, who falls for a mysterious 161 year old vampire named Stefan Salvatore. Just as their relationship starts to become serious, Stefans older brother Damon returns to Mystic Falls and plans to get revenge on his younger brother. As the season goes on both brothers begin to show affection for Elena, mainly because of her resemblance to their past love Kathrine Pierce. It is soon found out that Elena is a decendant of Kathrine, she eventually shows up unexpectly and creates more drama.
I am a big fan of the vampire diaries and I find it quite addictive and unpredictable. At the end of every episode i cant wait untill the next week because it leaves you wanting to know more.
